Locals Vie for Victory in Atascosa County Tournament
The Battle for Atascosa County Alumni Tournament recently took place at the Pleasanton Athletics Complex, featuring graduates from Pleasanton, Jourdanton, Poteet, and Charlotte High School. The event, organized by Pleasanton girls head basketball coach Jose Guajardo, aimed to raise funds for the girls’ basketball program.
The tournament saw participation from six teams in the men’s bracket and three in the women’s bracket. Guajardo expressed satisfaction with the turnout, noting the support from the community in attendance. The primary goal of the tournament was to generate funds for the girls’ basketball program.
Originally intended to fund a Dr. Dish shooting machine for the girls’ team, a generous anonymous donor stepped in with a donation, redirecting the tournament proceeds towards purchasing new jerseys, shooting uniforms, and backpacks for the girls. A total of $1,260 was raised through admissions and concessions during the alumni games.
Looking ahead, Guajardo expressed optimism for the future of the tournament, hoping to attract more teams for the next edition. The vision is to expand the event by inviting additional schools to participate, with a goal of making it a larger and more competitive tournament in the coming years.
The tournament showcased the competitive spirit and camaraderie among alumni from the local high schools, fostering a sense of community and support for the girls’ basketball program. With the success of the inaugural event, there is anticipation and excitement for the growth and development of the Battle for Atascosa County Alumni Tournament in the years to come.
